AIZAWL: An accident took place at a stone quarry in rural Mizoram on the evening of Monday that led to the trapping of several workers.

A stone quarry in the Hnahthual Village located in the southern part of Mizoram collapsed on Monday. Several labours got trapped in the debris as many of them were still working when the accident took place.

Search and rescue operations continued throughout the night in the location of the disaster. The exact number of the trapped people was not known, but several reports mentioned that a total of 12 labours were engaged in operations when the entire hillside came down.

According to reports most of the missing labours engaged in the operations were of non-Mizo origins. They were engaged with ABCI Infrastructure private limited and were working in the quarry at Maudarh village of Hnahthial as mentioned by the Superintendent of Police, Vineet Kumar.

As many as eight dead bodies were recovered from amidst the rumble till the morning of Tuesday. Four people were still said to be missing till that time.

Local people and district officials from the Hnahthial district rushed to the location as soon as the news spread. Members of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) from the nearby villages also rushed to the location to assist in search and rescue operations.

The Maudarh village of Hnahthial district is located about 160 km from the capital city of Aizawl. The company which was working at the site of the accident is currently working on the construction of a highway between Hnahthail and Dawn. The workers were engaged in the collection and removal of boulders when they were trapped.

A video shot by someone at the time of the accident shows loose soil and rocks caving in on the quarry. People near the landslide are seen running for their lives in the video.
